Indigenous Walking Tour at the University of Washington

First Edition: 2021

Written by Owen Oliver

This piece of work was created, written, and curated within multiple Indigenous lands and waters. Not limited to but including the Musqueam, Duwamish, Suquamish, Tulalip, Muckleshoot, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian territories.

In October of 2020, Owen Oliver commissioned me to illustrate The Indigenous Walking Tour of UW, a narrative guidebook of the University of Washington that invites the reader to stop at several locations of prominence to Indigenous Peoples on the University of Washington Campus.

I worked and collaborated with Owen over the course of six months — reading drafts of the text and providing sketches and layout proposals — to create a composite illustration of some of the major stops on the tour. Incorporating elements of traditional Coast Salish design and Northwest Coast formline, as well as on location studies of the environment around campus, it was an honor and a joy to be able to work on this project.

You can purchase your own copy of the booklet here, from the University of Washington Bookstore. All profits go to the the Marvin Oliver Memorial Endowed Fund for UW undergraduate students in American Indian Studies.
